Classic Mac and Cheese

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs for topping
  • 2 tbsp butter melted, for topping

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook, whisking constantly for about 2 minutes (to form a roux).
  • Slowly whisk in the milk and cook until the mixture begins to thicken, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella, stirring until the cheeses are completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Add mustard powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Mix the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce until fully coated.
  • Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, combine melted butter with panko breadcrumbs and sprinkle over the top of the mac and cheese.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.
  • Serve hot and enjoy the cheesy goodness!
