Equipment

  • Grill or stovetop skillet
  • Spatula
  • Tongs

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 blend for juiciness
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese or American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns toasted
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for grilling
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Toppings:

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Pickles
  • Sliced onions
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat or heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Form the beef into 4 equal patties (about 1/4 pound each), making a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while cooking. Season generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • Grill the patties for about 4 minutes on each side, until cooked to your desired doneness.
  • For stovetop cooking: Heat the olive oil in the skillet and cook the patties for about 4 minutes per side.
  • Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last minute of cooking, and let it melt.
  • Toast the buns on the grill or in the skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  • Assemble the burgers by placing the beef patty with melted cheese on the bottom bun, followed by your choice of toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, etc.).
  • Top with the bun and serve hot with fries or a side of your choice.
